It’s no secret I love Lexi Blake. I’d been looking forward to this crossover event and her book, in particular, for some time. By any other standard this book would be excellent, by the standard set by Lexi in this and other series, however, it just didn’t quite live up to what I’ve come to expect from her.

Close Cover is the sixteenth book in Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series. This book can be read as a standalone, there are characters from previous books in that series, and it does touch on the other couples from the Masters and Mercenaries crossover event, but nothing that takes away from the understanding of this novel. Close Cover is the only full-length novel in the Masters and Mercenaries crossover. This book is written in third-person semi-omniscient perspective, alternatively following Lisa and Remy’s thoughts.

Secret keeping, misinformation, lying by omission. One of the more frustrating tropes in romance and this book was rife with it. From Remy and Lisa’s first meaningful interaction to the greatest conflict of their relationship. While I did understand Remy’s motivations in both situations, you could feel they were headed for disaster because he wasn’t forthright with Lisa about his feelings about her and the reason for his reentry to her life.

I was rooting for Lisa and Remy, I continually had mixed feelings about them – for myriad reasons – but they were pretty adorable together. I especially loved how reverently he spoke of, and to, her. The suspension scene was sublime; his poetry transcended the beauty of the rest of the scene. Lisa sometimes felt beyond awkward when they were together, the crux of their connection definitely rested on Remy’s massive shoulders.

Close Cover was well-paced. I never felt like there was a lull in the forward momentum of the book. It did have a little less action than I’ve come to expect from the Masters and Mercenaries series, and most of the tension was developed with speculation and revelations of coincidental past events. Lexi Blake did a great job of feeding her readers enough crumbs of information to feel invested in the plot without giving so much that the entirety of the plot was predictable.

I wish I would have felt more connected to the characters in this book. I’m not sure what was lacking, but I didn’t feel the deep emotional tie to these characters that I usually do when reading Ms. Blake’s stories. They fell a little flat for me, Lisa more so than Remy; he felt more well-developed than she did.

Lexi Blake is one of my favorite authors. She always develops interesting and suspenseful plots, with sympathetic characters. She writes strong heroines, who’s best qualities are complemented by their life partners. This book, while not my favorite of hers, carried those traits and was a great way to conclude the Masters and Mercenaries crossover series.

I have been a fan of the Masters and Mercenaries series for awhile now, so I was excited to see that Remy was going to get his turn at finding his HEA!

The sexy Cajun Dom has been on Lisa's radar for months, but when she approached him at Sanctum he didn't exactly handle turning her down with finesse and that hurt still lingers with her. Remy is a really good guy and there is no doubt he is attracted to Lisa, but he has some hangups that hold him back from allowing himself to enjoy her. First and foremost, family is everything to him and he is laser-focused on saving up enough money to buy his family business back from his cousin. That business supports his whole town in Louisiana, and if he cannot come up with the required funds, his cousin is going to sell off the land to a developer and destroy their bayou. Remy knows that he will be leaving McKay- Taggart to return to home to run the business so creating roots in Dallas is not in his best interest. Also, Lisa scares him to death. He thinks she is a rich girl looking to take a walk on the wild side with a guy from the wrong side of the tracks, and he has already gone down that path once. He was burned pretty badly by his ex-wife who fit that bill, and he is all set with going for round two.

When Lisa's family approaches him about protecting her from the danger she now finds herself in, his first instinct is to say no and run in the opposite direction as fast as he can. But he is the only operative available at the moment, and the money they are offering him will allow him to make the final payment on the family business. As much as he knows this assignment will be a bad idea, he cannot realistically say no and destroy not only his town's hopes but also Lisa's best chance at surviving this mess because he is her best option to keep her safe. Keeping little Remy in his pants is a whole different story... and when her family asks him to keep the fact that he is on assignment to protect her from Lisa herself, you know things are going to get ugly!

Lisa may look the part of the spoiled little rich girl, but looks can be deceiving. Her sister-in-law is not shy about sharing her designer wardrobe, and Lisa is not averse to looking nice or wearing nice things. Her roots are laid firmly in the trailer park though where her older brother Will had to become both mother and father to Lisa and their sisters when he was just 16 in order to keep them off the radar of social services. She has worked hard to get her MBA and she cannot believe her first real job turned into a debacle of discovering her boss is a money launderer. No one wants to hire a whistleblower though, so she finds herself out of a job and in dire financial straits. She is a prideful woman and doesn't want to let anyone know how bad her situation is becoming, especially her family. When Remy moves in across the hall from her, she just adds it to the list of little insults life is throwing her way. Then he saves her from a bad situation, and his natural charm and that dang sexy accent are just going to be her undoing...

Remy and Lisa have palpable chemistry, and their kinks fit together remarkably well when they can actually communicate with each other and get on the same page. Her stubbornness and pride are big issues, but so is his aversion to women who he thinks resemble his ex-wife. Add in the fact that he is keeping a big secret from her and things are sure to go off the rails! When he has to go back home and takes Lisa with him to keep her safe, that homecoming is both sweet and funny at times, but he has his work cut out for him when it comes to winning her trust. I loved the poetry that his mind generates when he is in the moment- it definitely had me swooning right along with her! Close Cover is equal parts romance, action, suspense and heat, and it is a great addition to the series!
I love the "Masters and Mercenaries" series, but I didn't know how I would feel about this book since it's part of a larger crossover effort. I ended up loving it. Remy is romantic and passionate and once he gets over his assumption that "Lisa is a rich girl who will never appreciate a blue collar guy like me" thing, he's all in. Blake did a great job of taking a playboy character and believably developing him into an affectionate and dedicated lover.
Because I've read Blake's books as they were published, I had forgotten about Lisa Daley and her siblings. It was a joy to have them return and get glimpses into Will & Bridget and Mitch & Lauren's current relationships. Even Lila Daley appeared and while she was disagreeable, I can't wait for her to get a story.
I think what I enjoyed the most about this book is that Blake introduced a new setting and a whole new set of characters related to Remy and his hometown. I would love to read a book where his sister gets her happily ever after.
This is a great book and unlike many of the other books in the Masters and Mercenaries series, I think you could read this book without having read any of the others and still fully enjoy it.
