The first book of Brian Thacker's I came across was his 2009 published Sleeping Around: A Couch Surfing Tour of the Globe. I found it to be an interesting read and the author someone who definitely knows how to tell a tale. Since then I've read all of his previous work with this being the last of the old books I tracked down (it was published in 2002). This one's a bit different in that it's a collection of 27 short travel tales instead of one big tale, and what also makes it fun is that all 27 stories revolve around a different method of transportation. You've got your main obvious ones, hire car, bus, train, motorcycle, truck and also your more obscure such as rowboat, camel, toboggan, donkey, elephant to name just a few. Thacker also tells you the reader some interesting fact tidbits on each mode of transport slotted in somewhere amongst the recounting of each tale.

Thacker seems to be a nice guy that you'd be happy to run into somewhere while backpacking on your own. You won't always agree with his opinions on everything such as when he wrecked a hire motorcycle by basically not knowing how to ride one and was livid when the rental company wanted him to pay for the damages. I thought the rental guy was quite entitled to do that and Thacker should have taken the responsibility for his own actions especially when you consider he hid substantial damage and left another company to fit the bill on a hire car in Morocco.

I think a few of these inclusions Thacker or the editor were stetching it to try and find something that would fit the parametres such the diary from a pub crawl using the London Tube.

It's hard to say why Thacker books pass the time so easily, I guess it simply because he's one of those rare travel authors who knows how to recount a tale.

Planes Trains Elephants Brian Thacker 9781865088846 Books Reviews

Just finished reading the book. Read "Rule No. 5 No Sex on the Bus" few years back and now this one. Thacker knows how to write a funny book. As with "Rule No. 5" I was giggling all the time.

To the author, thanks for sharing your adventures with us and for reigniting many memories!
I bought this book and couldnt put it down. I was laughing out loud continuously throughout the chapters of Rule No.5 No Sex on the Bus!
Anyone who has ever traveled to Europe either on a Tour Guide or seeing the sights on their own will appreciate Brian Thacker's sense of humor, his outspokeness about misunderstood european culture and all the things we wish we could say outloud but didnt!
It will re-unite you with Europe all over again, or for first time visitors it will give you a down to earth perspective of what its like touring Europe on a bus.
This book is one you will enjoy page after page and have you feeling you are apart of the "Tour". =))
A very funny author and his brief stories and misadventures all over the world while riding every kind of transportation imaginable. I will read more. Thanks for the laughs and great writing style.
In this very funny book Brian Thacker describes jounreys he has made in many different countries using many different forms of transport. He is equally amusing whether he is writing about traveling by moped in Greece, taxi in Belfast, jeep in Hawaii, camel in Egypt, skis in Switzerland, elephant in Thailand, bicycle in China, horse in Mongolia,or any of the other many and varied forms of transport he's used in his life so far. Some of his observations puzzle me a little, I can't think why he dislikes Macdonalds, for instance, if you have children they're a godsend, and dirt cheap too. As with 'Rule No.5, no sex on the bus' the humour is a bit crude at times, but if you don't mind that you will enjoy this book.
