On a hike deep in the Rocky Mountains, Kai Monahan watches as a dozen dragons--actual freaking dragons--battle beneath a fat white moon. When one crashes nearly dead at her feet and transforms into a man, Kai does the only thing a decent person could she grabs the nearest sword and saves his life.
As the dragon/man, Rhys, recovers from the attack, a chance brush of skin against skin binds him inextricably to Kai. Becoming heartsworn to a human--especially such a compelling one--is the last thing Rhys wants. But with an ancient enemy gathering to pit dragons against humanity and his strength nearly depleted, Kai has just become the one thing Rhys needs. A complete bond will give him the strength to fight; a denied bond means certain death.
Kai is terrified at the thought of allowing any dragon into her mind...or her heart. Accepting the heartswearing and staying with the dragons means sacrificing everything, and Kai must decide if her freedom is worth risking Rhys's life--a life more crucial to the fate of humanity than she could possibly know.

I really enjoyed this book. (Five stars, duh.) It was both an adventure and a romance, a combination that I love, and kept me thoroughly interested all the way through--so much so that I read the whole thing in one day!

Kai is hiking in the Rocky Mountains with two of her college roommates, Juli and Charlotte, when they come across an unconscious girl on the trail. Juli and Charlotte hike back down the mountain to go for help, but once Kai is alone with the girl, she wakes up and starts freaking out, which leads to Kai discovering the existence of dragons. The injured girl, Deryn, is one, and there's an opposing faction of dragons that are after her and her friends. Deryn's group takes Kai along with them as they escape from the enemy dragons in order to keep her safe.

Kai ends up being cooped up in a cave with the dragons for several days. Some of them are friendly; others, not so much. Cadoc, the nicest, befriends her and tells her a bit about his world. Ashem, on the other hand, is a jerk. Rhys just tries to avoid her, until at their first accidental skin contact, an aspect of the dragons' inherent magic activates and Rhys and Kai are suddenly what the dragons call "heartsworn." Basically this means that Rhys is consumed with a deep longing to be near Kai, and the further away she goes, physically, the more pain he is in. They can end his pain and complete the heartswearing with a kiss, but Kai hardly knows Rhys and is not ready to commit her whole life to be his mate, especially being that he's in the middle of a war.

For the most part, I loved how Rhys handled the heartswearing situation. His mother was human, heartsworn to his father, but they had an awful relationship because his father never gave her any sort of choice about it, so Rhys is loath to follow in his footsteps and coerce Kai into leaving her family forever and spending the rest of her life with him. Even when Rhys was in exquisite pain, even when he knew the only way to make it stop would be to kiss Kai and finish the heartswearing, even when all the other dragons were telling him to just force a kiss on her and be done with it, he did everything he could to allow Kai the freedom to choose--even sometimes at the expense of the other dragons' safety. That's the kind of sticking to your guns I can admire.

However, Rhys also keeps the secret of his pain and the full extent of his responsibilities in the war from Kai, which I think was a bad choice. If he had told her straight-up from the beginning the consequences of her choice, she might have been more willing to complete the heartswearing and a lot of heartache might've been avoided. But if characters never made bad choices, there wouldn't be much of a story, now, would there? I thought Rhys's choice to keep secrets from Kai was a realistic one, if not necessarily wise.

One thing I really liked about "Soul of Smoke" was the magic. There are different types of dragons from different regions of the world, each with their own specialized abilities. For example, Rhys is a fire elemental, which means he can control heat and flame, both in his dragon and human forms. Some of the dragons' other abilities include lightning, telepathy, and cloaking.

On the subject of mature content: there is a good deal of dragon fighting, bleeding, and burning, but it never gets overly graphic. Probably the most potentially disturbing were the torture scenes, but I still found those less disturbing than some of what Dan Wells puts in his John Cleaver books. No sex. A few mild cuss words here and there, though the dragons mostly use their own "curses": for example, "get sundered."

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable book. My final rating: 4.5 stars, but since I can't give half stars it got rounded up to 5. I am already excited for the release of books 2 and 3 later this year! Caitlyn McFarland is a great new author to keep an eye on.

Soul of Smoke A Dragon Shifter Romance Dragonsworn Book 1 eBook Caitlyn McFarland Reviews

I'm such a huge fan. I was expecting the romance to sizzle, and it did, but there was a lot of depth to it as well. I'm an old married gal and found myself thinking of principles of the book that could apply to my relationship! Plus, hello--THE. WORLD. Holy cow. This world comes at you fully formed, a world that has existed forever and will exist long after this chapter of the story ends. She could write multiple series in this world. Just really good.
I enjoyed it. I bought the second right away. It's a YA fantasy romance, light on the romance and heavy on the fantasy. As this is the first in the series, I'm betting the romance develops later on. This book also struck me as very original in terms of plot, but it borrows enough interesting dragon lore from other tales to make it settle comfortably with what I already "know" about dragons. I felt the author answered some questions pretty quickly that otherwise would've bugged me - such as what happens to a "Wingless" mate of a dragon - and while I found Kai's reaction to a misunderstanding predictable, I reminded myself that this IS a YA novel and certain tropes must nearly always be maintained. That being said, there were several interesting plot twists that I look forward to following in the next two books. EXCELLENT read.

Also, I disagree with one review that likened this to Twilight with Dragons. I disagree because our MC, Kai, is pretty freakin' awesome. She's a former gymnast and super cool chick who LOVES the outdoors, including free-climbing cliffs and backpacking. She's not a clumsy "Oh-Please-Save-Me-I'm-Helpless" type. Nor is our main male lead dragon creeping on her constantly. She saves his life about as often as he saves hers. And she doesn't just fall into his arms in an I-Need-You-To-Live way. Nope. I'd say Kai is not your average YA heroine.
Since I read it in less than 24 hours and felt irritated whenever I had to put it down, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book.Without posting a summary (plenty of other people will have done that already), I can most easily describe "Soul of Smoke" by Caitlyn McFarland as Twilight meets Magic Dragons. Nobel prize-winning literature, it's probably not (though I found myself admiring many a phrase and laughing out loud frequently), but it's an entertaining story and a remarkable debut novel. The dialogue in the early chapters comes off as a bit contrived and there are a few glaring errors (such as POV jumping within a single POV, the odd missing or repeated word, and italics someone forgot to turn off), but around Chapter 3 or so the story really takes off.

The characters are well-written--especially the dragons. The female protagonist, Kai, started off strong but, as many other reviewers have commented, she gets a bit whiny and selfish later on. Of course, if I were in her situation, presented with a mate and a life I wouldn't have chosen for myself and sacrificing hopes, dreams, and freedom to save the human race...I'd probably whine, too.

And fair warning for the feminists out there--you will probably hate this book. Lots of Stockholm Syndrome and sacrificing of ambitions on the part of the female lead for the greater good. Also an appreciation for good qualities in a man that Kai believes she can "learn to love". Me, I'm just a sucker for fantasy and fluff. My biggest complaint was that by Chapter 3 none of the hot leads were in the sack with each other yet.

People complain about the cliffhangers, but come on, it's the first of a trilogy. Of course there's going to be cliffhangers. I thought they were pulled off really well. I'll definitely be coming back for more (already preordered the rest of the trilogy)!
