I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm a huge Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer fan and have been disappointed by modern authors in their genre. The characters are often written as modern characters with modern manners and some tweaks in language and clothing, historical customs are ignored, the plots are not well developed, and the romance is more like teenage angst than an adult relationship. This book is far better than most in these respects. The author develops most plot points enough for them to be understood (instead of blindsiding the reader with plot "twists"), explains most of the unconventional behavior of the characters, creates a believable romance, and keeps melodrama to a minimum. Of course, nothing is perfect - Ivy Carlisle's parents show an unbelievable lack of concern over her whereabouts, which is unlikely for the time when she lived. The overall result, however, is an enjoyable read, with some laughs and some love. I recommend to anyone looking for a few fun hours and to anyone who liked Edenbrooke (another that is better than most in this genre).

A delicious romance with a touch of mystery. I. Sure it will disappoint some because it is not packed with steamy explicit sex. But this novel doesn't need it any more than Georgette Heyer. Jack and Ivy are well drawn characters, and while ther are some inconsistencies, particularly how a woman poor as a church mouse could find the money for paints and canvases, these are rather minor quibbles.
Jack is swoony sailor and the author does a great job making him irresistibly broody as well. Ivy's sweetness is real and I enjoyed watching her find herself again. If your a My Fair Lady fan you'll like this better. The ending won't make you upset and there's no slippers to fetch. A great regency read that you will want to read over and over.
I'm also a fan of Shadow Mountain's Proper Romance series and was excited to read this book. I'd never read this author before and went into it with great hopes. I enjoyed the first half of the book, but it didn't quite deliver the fulfilling romance for me. I appreciated that it was clean, but I felt like the other plot lines (solving the mystery, finding a useful purpose in life, making real friends, etc.) were an effort to beef up the book because the central romance just didn't cut it. It was also hard to believe the supposed conflict keeping them apart and the resolution felt anti-climatic. Oh, and the increasing amount of head-hopping within a chapter (often three or four times!) detracted from the story.
Romance, clean.
This was a clever retelling of My Fair Lady, set in an earlier period, and switching the person who needs a redo from female to male. The basic premise with the parents is switched, with the mother instead of the father, being one of the more important characters as well.
Jack and Ivy's relationship grows and slowly develops as Jack realizes Ivy has a quick wit, and quick responses for what she sees as socially unfair and unkind behavior towards him and his sisters. As they spend more time together, there are definitely some sparks. Not sure about historical accuracy, but the scenes in the ballroom, the portrayal of the cruel and unfair parts of society were well-done, and of course the romance was a sweet to see develop.
I will definitely read more from this author.
Like Beauty and The Clockwork Beast, I couldn't put it down. What a great story full of adventure, friendship, family relationships, mystery and some romance. Nancy Campbell Allen has become one of my favorite authors, she really knows how to tell a story about friendship, family, honor, what to do in a situation when it becomes too hard to handle on your own, and of course love. Take Lady Ivy who is thrown into helping a stubborn sailor who inherits his grandfathers estate who wants nothing to do with and makes him into a true gentlemen even though she doesn't know he already is, at the beginning and then learns unconditional love for someone who she thought was helpless. Then there is Jack who wants nothing to do with the estate and who thinks Lady Ivy is some spoiled princess, but then he really gets to
Know her and he finds out her own heartaches. Next is Sophia his sister who just goes with it and becomes kindred spirits with Lady Ivy. Mary Jacks mother is such a sweet lady but the story doesn't focus a lot on her or Lady Ivy's Nana but they are still my favorite background characters. I loved how Lady Ivy and Sophia were able to help those who Couldn't help themselves and bring them out of dire circumstances. I loved the end, because it brought everything full circle so there wasn't anything left undone.
Well written and well paced, this story has a fun plot and it touches on a range of emotions. It has an interesting and likable cast of characters and leaves the door open for other stories. There are also some lovely turns of phrases. However, it contains enough historical inaccuracies that I could not truly enjoy it---but I'm super nerdy about the Regency era, so readers who have not delved into historical research would probably not notice nor mind them. The romance is steady and believable, the conflict is light but real, and the ending is satisfying. It is also squeaky clean and appropriate for anyone who enjoys a good clean romance.
Loved the story, but there were some inconsistencies. I didn't quite understand how a woman who was not allowed to have a season and hadn't come out yet, was attending parties. And why a girl who is so staunch on her principles to keep her reputation ruined by her sister, would allow herself to be seen with him so often and even be alone with him ( in his dressing room tying his cravat?). At times, she came across as a little bossy. And there should have been some final showdown between him and his cousin. Other than that, very good and clean.
